Entrepreneur and investor Jim Mellon highlights the very substantial uplift since October 2022, with the S&P now only 12% away from its January 2022 all-time high. He stresses, however, that another down leg of 30% could be possible before the end of 2023.

Jim Mellon agrees with Graham Rowan that commodities are experiencing a new supercycle. He points out that while China has become uninvestable for many investors, one can still invest in things that play a major role in China, such as luxury goods or commodities. Jim Mellon himself is very bullish on gold, and sees silver as a viable alternative for those wanting to play more volatility.

Jim Mellon points out the positive performance of the companies included in the Agronomics portfolio, both in terms of valuations and making headway towards the market. He cites VitroLabs' lab-grown leather as well as precision fermentation foods as examples of products that are now on sale, and highlights that cell agriculture-based products are now also getting closer to the market. Jim Mellon emphasises the major difference between plant-based foods and foods produced through cell agriculture and precision fermentation, the latter of which have the capacity of being much cheaper, healthier, and more environmentally-friendly.

Jim Mellon sees a lot of money coming into the space, and considers the longevity sector as one to watch, albeit very carefully. He stresses the need for a diversified portfolio, and for everything to be science- and evidence-based. Personally and from a societal perspective, Jim Mellon views longevity as a great and vital opportunity, particularly in light of the demographic crisis in many countries across the world.
