Dr Greg Bailey, CEO of Juvenescence, introduces "Investing in the Future of Longevity – the Ketone Chapter", a webinar that hosts a number of experts to discuss the opportunity to modify aging, and address a variety of pathologies with food-like therapies. Juvenescence is a drug development company that since its launch in 2017 has created a pipeline of six pharmaceutical therapies for supplements to achieve the goal of a longer, healthy life. The company aims to be a dominant player in ketone esters.

Dr Brianna Stubbs is the Lead Translational Scientist at The Buck Institute for Research on Aging, the first independent biomedical institute that is focussed solely on the biology of aging. Having researched ketosis for around ten years, Dr Stubbs currently focusses her research on how ketones and ketone metabolism can modulate aging biology.

Dr Jonathan Little is a PhD scientist who leads the Exercise, Metabolism and Inflammation Laboratory at the University of British Colombia. The laboratory aims to optimise lifestyle interventions, to treat, prevent and reverse metabolic disease and reduce chronic inflammatory conditions.

Dr John Newman is a geriatrician and a basic scientist at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, and at the University of California San Francisco. In his role as a basic scientist, he is focussed on the role of ketone bodies in older adults.

Dr Peter Crawford is an adult cardiologist and physician scientist at the University of Minnesota where he oversees a research programme dedicated to understanding the metabolic origins of disease, and serves as Associate Dean for Research Operations.

Dr Jonathan Little defines endogenous ketosis as being "designed to ensure that the brain has appropriate fuel when food or carbonhydrates are scarce", with ketosis representing detactable ketones in the bloodstream. Fasting or a ketogenic diet are two ways to get into ketosis through diet.

Dr John Newman describes exogenous ketones as a way to deliver ketone bodies directly (as a food, supplement, or drug), thus bypassing other means of producing ketone by the body itself, such as fasting or a ketogenic diet. He considers ketone esters as the cutting-edge of exogenous ketones.

Dr Jonathan Little highlights that both a ketogenic diet or fasting have long been known as beneficial to treating diabetes. Building on other studies into the impact of exogenous ketones on lowering glucose and inflammation, the team has started a series of studies to demonstrate the glucose-lowering effects of exogenous ketones.

Dr Jonathan Little sees the biggest immediate impact of exogenous ketones in the effects on the brain. For his own research, he finds the effects of ketones on the immune system as most exciting. 

Dr Peter Crawford agrees that the greatest opportunity lies in the domain of neurodegenerative disease and cognitive dysfunction, as well as the prospect of heart failure, and regulation and control of inflammation and modulation of immunity in a protected manner. He highlights the need for a better understanding of how ketones are working in a given context.

Dr John Newman agrees with Dr Peter Crawford and sees the leading edge for the keytone biology field in its readiness for clinical applications. He also sees the need for additional research to help design molecules and therapies, and further refine the diseases and applications that will benefit the most from ketone biology.
