Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. Sarah Lowther questions Hybridan Head of Research Derren Nathan about its investing opportunities and pitfalls.

Hydrogen has a varied colour palette, ranging from grey (hydrogen derived from coal, methane, natural gas, etc.) and green (split from water using electricity) to purple (nuclear, zero-carbon), yellow (solar) or brown (coal). Blue hydrogen is of particular interest as it represents the real hybrid production method.

While batteries are already prevalent as the power trains for light vehicles, hydrogen lends itself more to heavy-duty applications, such as trucking, shipping, or industries that are difficult to decarbonise.

Companies that warrant special attention include i) energy storage play Infinity, whose combine project produces green hydrogen for energy storage, ii) fuel cell players that turn hydrogen back into electricity, iii) AFC Energy, which is looking to enable hydrogen-powered engines for ships, iv) Getech, which provides harbour-based hydrogen hubs, and v) companies that are reinventing themselves such as Oracle Power, which is looking to set up a green hydrogen production facility in Pakistan.

The hydrogen industry ranges from production (companies looking to set up hydrogen production plants) and production technology and hybrids thereof (companies looking to create hydrogen from waste) to energy conversion and supporting infrastructure. In addition, there is a miscellaneous array of companies in this space, such as hydrogen investment funds, actual users of hydrogen, consultants etc.
