As an FCA-authorised UK company launched in May 2022, Mintus operates as an alternative investment fund manager. Qualified investors have two options to invest, either through a fund structure (minimum investment: 100,000 USD) or via investing in specific artworks (minimum investment: 2,500 GBP). The company currently has two paintings on its platform, by Andy Warhol and George Condo.

Mintus operates a 0/20 fee model whereby it does not charge any management fee but a 20% performance fee once a profit has been generated. It also applies a 1% exit fee, as well as a 9% mark-up on the initial negotiation price. The sale of the artwork is estimated to take place 2-7 years after purchase, though Mintus usually aims for a timeframe of 2-3 years.

Mintus defines three audiences as its key targets: 1) financially savvy investors, 2) professionals/early adopters, and 3) art enthusiasts. The company sees the uncorrelated nature of the product, inflation hedging, and the growing demand for diversification as key factors that help attract investors to its offering.

Mintus is planning to release USD 150 million worth of inventory into the market in 2022. In addition, the company has two funds totalling USD 210 million. The aim is to get close to the USD 1 billion mark for arts, before considering to diversify into other asset classes.

The current macroeconomic environment – comprising high inflation, rising inflation rates, the war in Ukraine, and a poor stock market performance in 2022 – does not appear to have a major negative effect on Mintus. The company sees an uptake in interest from institutional investors, and stresses that historically, arts has proven to be a resilient asset class.
