Following his departure from Aberdeen Asset Management, Gilbert held board memberships at Sky and Glencore, and Chairmanship at Revolut. Offered the opportunity to do SPACs by most of the investment banks, Gilbert opted to use cash shells instead to help consolidate the asset management industry.

Looking back at his experiences at Aberdeen Asset Management, Martin Gilbert would opt for a more flexible approach going forward, with a lesser focus on consolidation. He would also neglect Aberdeen Asset Management's single distribution capability approach.

Martin Gilbert puts a strong emphasis on a fund manager's experience. He singles out UK income fund manager Adrian Froth as well as James Anderson, who he sees as having transformed growth fund management.
