Jonathan Davis speaks to Martin Gilbert, founder of Aberdeen Asset Management, about his career. Following his departure from Aberdeen Asset Management, Gilbert held board memberships at Sky and Glencore, and Chairmanship at Revolut. Offered the opportunity to do SPACs by most of the investment banks, Gilbert opted to use cash shells instead to help consolidate the asset management industry.

Looking back at his experiences at Aberdeen Asset Management, Martin Gilbert would opt for a more flexible approach going forward, with a lesser focus on consolidation. He would also neglect Aberdeen Asset Management's single distribution capability approach.

Martin Gilbert believes that there are some excellent politicians around. He has a very high regard for Michael Gove as well as Lord Grimstone, his former chairman. Other notable politicians that Gilbert singles out include Alex Salmond, Nicola Sturgeon, Alistair Darling, and Gordon Brown.

Martin Gilbert considers Aberdeen Asset Management his best investment, with the purchase of Morgan Grenfell Asset Management in 2005 representing one of the great investments made at the firm. He sees split-caps as the worst period in his investment career.
