Looking back at his experiences at Aberdeen Asset Management, Martin Gilbert would opt for a more flexible approach going forward, with a lesser focus on consolidation. He would also neglect Aberdeen Asset Management's single distribution capability approach.

Martin Gilbert puts a strong emphasis on a fund manager's experience. He singles out UK income fund manager Adrian Froth as well as James Anderson, who he sees as having transformed growth fund management.

Martin Gilbert believes that there are some excellent politicians around. He has a very high regard for Michael Gove as well as Lord Grimstone, his former chairman. Other notable politicians that Gilbert singles out include Alex Salmond, Nicola Sturgeon, Alistair Darling, and Gordon Brown.

Martin Gilbert considers Aberdeen Asset Management his best investment, with the purchase of Morgan Grenfell Asset Management in 2005 representing one of the great investments made at the firm. He sees split-caps as the worst period in his investment career.
